Have a Heart - Save a Child

A message from Nina Cooper,
president of Nina Designs

Dear Friends,

Please join my "Have a Heart, Save a Child" campaign by purchasing this beautiful silver pendant.

I am the lucky mother of two wonderful daughters, both of whom I adopted from China as infants. For a number of complicated reasons, China is full of babies and little girls living in orphanages. Last year American families adopted almost 8,000 of these children, but many more got left behind.

For many years I have donated money to an organization called Half The Sky Foundation (HTS) which operates infant nurture centers, preschools, foster care and individual educational projects inside government orphanages in China. They have 27 centers operating in 11 provinces. Their early enrichment and educational programs are critical for proper childhood development. Without these programs, babies and toddlers have little or no stimulation. They are often developmentally delayed, which leads them to be labeled as retarded and denied a normal education.

This year I have made a commitment to raise $60,000 to establish a new preschool and infant nurture center through HTS. These funds will provide training for new teachers and nannies, renovation, equipment, furnishings, toys, educational materials, and more. Jenny Bowen, who I know well, founded the organization and I have total faith that all of the funds are spent efficiently and well administered.

To raise money for the school, I designed a beautiful silver heart with the word "Love" on one side and the Chinese character for love on the reverse side. Each heart comes on a sterling silver chain. The hearts necklace sells for $35 at Nina Designs. 100% of the revenue collected will be donated to Half The Sky Foundation.

If you would like more information about Half the Sky, or you prefer to make a tax deductible donation, go to www.halfthesky.org. To allocate your donation to this project, write 'Nina's Fund' in 'Other Instructions'.

People often say to me, "Your children are so lucky that you adopted them." The truth is that all of our children are extremely lucky. They could have been born in a country ensnared in poverty or local warfare. They could have been born to families that could not take care of them. Please help me celebrate our collective good fortune and honor all the children of the world by improving young lives one school at a time.

With thanks,
Nina Cooper
